The Prime Minister of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with the President of Somaliland, Ahmed Muhamed Mohamoud Silanyo in İstanbul on Wednesday.
Somaliland unilaterally declared its independence as a de facto sovereign state in 1991 after a coalition of clan-based armed opposition groups ousted the nation’s long-standing military government. Somalia wants Somaliland to be part of a united country. But Somaliland which has been a haven of relative peace amid the chaos and bloodshed in Somalia, is seeking international recognition. The international community is urging the two sides to find a negotiated settlement.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamed and Somaliland President Ahmed M Mohamoud Silanyo came together for the first time in a tripartite meeting held by top Turkish officials at the request of the two parties in Ankara in mid-April.
HE President Ahmed Mohamed Mahmoud (Silanyo) today in a ground breaking ceremony laid the foundation stone for the construction of the extension of a 1KM to the existing 2KM runway at the Burco airport in Togdheer region. President Silanyo after the ground ceremony attended the graduation ceremony where he was the guest of honor held for more than 150 students at Golis University Burco.
The head of state later in the day attended laid the foundation stone during a ground breaking ceremony for a new road which will link Burco and the Erigavo in the town Ina –Afmadoobe.
President Silanyo Lays the Foundation Stone for The Extension of the runaway at Burco Airport
ASC all Somalilanders,
Last night was special and historic night for Somalilanders in the UK, it was an occasion where all had one thing in mind, a successful fundraising event for Buroa - Erigabo Road.
A big thank you to all the Somalilanders who took part in this huge fundraising event. Indeed it was a well organised/presented event with good outcome. Thanks to all for attending and donating generously.
Also a big thank you to the organising committee and the event volunteers for weeks of hard work that led to this positive outcome. Thanks to the Somaliland media for their tireless effort to transmit the event to our people around the globe. Special thanks to the SLNTV team for transmitting the event live. I must also say a big thank you to the event presenters Mr Mohamed O Maigag and Mr Ali Ahmed Rabi (Ali Senyo) for their dedication and professionalism.
Framing the Somaliland Special Arrangement
Somaliland’s unique development trajectory has evolved out of a process of more than 20 years of grassroots peacebuilding and statebuilding, forged in relative isolation from other development contexts characterising the region. Over time, a complex and resilient institutional structure has taken shape in which modern institutions, traditional and religious authorities, the private sector and civil society work together in order to effectively ensure peace, stability, freedom against piracy and terrorism, economic growth, the delivery of basic services, the protection of livelihoods and social development. Since the ratification of the Somaliland Constitution by popular referendum in 2001, Somaliland’s development path has been led by five democratically-elected governments, with the House of Elders (Guurti) playing a traditionally-mandated role in maintaining peace, order and cultural integrity.
Despite facing many pressing problems, both in Europe and elsewhere, it is encouraging to see that EU leaders are going to focus on my region next week, in a Conference – the New Deal for Somalia, that willsanction a clear and improved framework for international donors’ engagement with the Somali people.
The Horn of Africa has for a long time been seen as one of the world’s most troubled regions. It has been defined on the front pages of Europe’s newspapers by conflict, repression, famine, terrorism and piracy. Thanks to international support, Somalia has made important progress since 2012 but it remains very fragile and in need of further assistance to achieve stability, security and good governance.
To that end, Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs, and Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, will gather in Brussels with a number of donors and beneficiaries.
